What do you need for taking driving lessons and getting your licence


There are a few requirements that need to be met before you you can start taking driving lessons on public roads and below are details and links to the various resources you may need.

Provisional Licence



Before you learn to drive, you must apply for a provisional driving licence.

You can apply by completing the DL1 application form which is available from main Post Office branches or MOT test centres.

You will need to enclose original documentation confirming your identity, a passport style colour photograph and the appropriate fee.

Send your completed application and payment to:

Alternatively, you may submit your application at any one of the seven MOT test centres that provide a checking service. The test centres offering this service are situated in Armagh, Ballymena, Belfast , Downpatrick, Enniskillen, Londonderry (New Buildings) and Omagh or Coleraine County Hall..

The DVA aims to deliver your driving licence to you within three weeks of receiving your application.

You need to wait for your new licence to arrive before driving. Please allow at least three weeks for your licence to arrive before contacting the DVA.

The Theory Test



The Theory Test is a computer based test that assesses the candidate for :
  • Alertness
  • Attitude
  • Safety and your vehicle
  • Safety margins
  • Hazard awareness
  • Vulnerable road users
  • Other types of vehicles
  • Vehicle handling
  • Motorway rules
  • Rules of the road
  • Road and traffic signs
  • Documents
  • Accidents
  • Vehicle loading


The test is split into two parts. The first consists of a multiple choice question section. To pass this part you must answer 43 out of 50 questions correctly. The second part is the hazard perception test. The pass mark for this part of the test is 44 out of 75. Candidates must pass both parts of the test to obtain a test certificate.

The Practical Test



Once your driving has reached an suitable level, you will be wanting to get your driving test booked. The timescale for bookings can vary one month to the next depending on the number of other learners applying around the same time. You should not just go ahead and book the test before checking that a car will be available first!
